About the Dialogue

Within the framework of India’s G20 presidency, Bureau of Indian Standards is delighted to organize the G20 Standards Dialogue 2023 on 02 and 03 November 2023 at the iconic Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India. The dialogue will explore how sustainability can be addressed through inclusive standardisation and good regulatory practices to achieve ‘Zero Defect and Zero Effect’. The event is being organized with the support and guidance of Ministry on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

This event will witness participation from World Standards Cooperation, a high-level collaboration between the three world-wide international standards development organizations, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), G20 member countries and invitees. The dialogue provides a platform for industry leaders, government officials, standards professionals, regulators and policy makers to come together and drive progress in standardization and global regulatory environment. It aims to explore how the G20 goal of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ can be realized through the foundation built by standards. With a focus on sustainability, regulatory excellence, and stakeholder engagement, we aim to shape the standards of tomorrow.

Agenda Highlights

Thursday, 2nd November 2023

Opening Ceremony, from 14:00 – 15:30 IST (UTC +5:30)

The event will consist of welcome address by Director General (BIS), participation from high ranking officials of Government of India and World Standards Cooperation, in the presence of Hon’ble Minister for Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

Session I: Standards for Sustainability, from 16:00 – 18:00 IST (UTC +5:30)

Agenda 2030 sets forth a “bold and transformative” plan of action to shift the world towards sustainable development. Sustainability is the need of the hour across all sectors, spanning from chemicals to electronics to renewable energy. This session provides an opportunity to discuss the role of standards in addressing and promoting sustainability in key areas.

Session II: Technical Regulations And Good Regulatory Practices,
from 11:00 – 13:00 IST (UTC +5:30)

The G20 Standards Dialogue recognizes the pivotal role that technical regulations and good regulatory practices play in fostering global economic stability, innovation, and sustainable growth. This session delves into the world of technical regulations and good regulatory practices in a wide array of sectors ranging from food to electronics, as well as upcoming aspects like sustainability related regulations. The session would facilitate a comprehensive discussion on technical regulations and good regulatory practices to enhance economic cooperation and resilience among G20 members.

Session III: Stakeholder Engagement For Standardization, from 14:00 – 16:00 IST (UTC +5:30)

The engagement of all relevant stakeholders is essential in the process of standardization, as this provides a holistic view of the subject during the development of innovative and globally relevant standards. Challenges such as lack of awareness, resources and technical knowledge, as well as cultural differences, are some of the impediments to effective stakeholder engagement faced by Standards Bodies. This session revolves around these challenges and brainstorms on the strategies to overcome them, ensuring a more inclusive and collaborative standardization process. It would also explore methods to foster collaboration between stakeholders for effective standard-setting that compliment national and international efforts towards ease of doing business and strengthening global trade and commerce.

The session will feature remarks from G20 members and Invitees (not exceeding 2 minutes), on the theme of the event.

Airport shuttle bus service and metro train are the easiest and fastest means of transport to the center of New Delhi. You can catch a prepaid taxi after exiting the arrival hall.
