Chennai Branch Office - I is situated in the Southern Regional Office (SRO) building. SRO was originally established in January 1969 at Satya Murthy Bhavan, G. P. Road, Chennai.

SRO was later shifted to its own building presently situated at CIT Campus, IV Cross road, Taramani, Chennai in the year 1976. The building for Southern Regional Office and Laboratory Complex was inaugurated in July 1976 by Shri T. A. Pai, Union Minister of Industry and Civil Supplies, at Madras on 12 July 1976 in the presence of Shri B. S. Krishnamachary, DG, ISI.

After shifting of laboratory from the main building, Marks Department, Chennai was divided into MDC-I (Marks Department, Chennai – I, Non Engineering) and MDC-II (Marks Department, Chennai – II, Engineering) in 1988. After that MDC – II was renamed as CNBO-I (Chennai Branch Office - I).

Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office - I has jurisdiction over 4 districts of Tamilanadu. CNBO – I is the custodian of more than 765 Product Certification Licences and more than 1750 Hallmarking Licences. Product Certification Licensees are generally manufacturers of Steel , Tyres, Cement, Electrical Product and Package Drinking Water.
