Journey of WRL began in the year 1964 along Grant Road station, Mumbai, where it functioned in rented premises at Novelty Cinema Building.

Subsequently, the lab shifted to another rented premises at Chunabhatti, Sion, Mumbai in 1977.

BIS follows a well-established complaint redressal procedure. Complaints are recorded centrally at Complaints Management and Enforcement Department (CMED). Complaints can be made both offline and online. Online complaint can be made through mobile app BIS CARE or by use of Consumer Engagement Portal.
