After shifting of laboratory from the main building, Marks Department, Chennai was divided into MDC-I (Marks Department, Chennai – I, Non Engineering) and MDC-II (Marks Department, Chennai – II, Engineering) in 1988. After that MDC – II was renamed as CNBO (Chennai Branch Office).
Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office – I has jurisdiction over 4 districts of Tamilanadu. CNBO is the custodian of more than 765 Product Certification Licences and more than 1750 Hallmarking Licences. Product Certification Licensees are generally manufacturers of Steel , Tyres, Cement, Electrical Product and Packaged Drinking Water.
