Natural Gas Fuelling Stations — LNG Stations for Fuelling Vehicles (ISO 16924 : 2016, MOD)

This Indian Standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and inspection of stations used for fuelling vehicles with liquefied natural gas (LNG). It has been developed to support the safe and reliable deployment of LNG and LCNG (LNG-to-CNG) fuelling infrastructure in response to the growing adoption of natural gas as an alternative transport fuel and the need for standardized engineering and safety practices.

It outlines a comprehensive framework covering the major components and systems of LNG fuelling stations, including storage tanks, cryogenic pumps, compressors, vaporizers, dispensers, piping systems, and electrical equipment. It establishes requirements related to system design, site layout, equipment compatibility, and installation practices to ensure the safe handling and transfer of LNG under various operational conditions.

This also emphasizes risk management and safety by addressing hazard identification, fire and explosion protection, emergency shutdown arrangements, and protective devices to prevent overpressure and other hazardous situations. These provisions aim to minimize risks associated with the storage and dispensing of cryogenic natural gas fuels.

In addition, it includes guidance on testing, commissioning, inspection, and maintenance of LNG fuelling stations to ensure reliable long-term performance. Operational aspects such as traffic management within station premises, personnel training, and safety signage are also considered, thereby supporting the safe, efficient, and standardized development of LNG-based vehicle fuelling infrastructure.
