Referral Assay Lab (RAL) for gold testing was established in March 2022.

Total Testing Sections: 5

WROL has five testing sections comprising Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Microbiological, and Referral Assay Lab, each headed by a Scientific Cadre Officer as Officer-in-Charge.

Technical Manpower Available (Section-wise):

• Electrical Lab: 8 Testing Personnel and 4 Technicians
• Chemical Lab: 12 Testing Personnel
• Mechanical Lab: 13 Testing Personnel and 9 Technicians
• Microbiology Lab: 6 Testing Personnel
• Referral Assay Lab (RAL): 5 Testing Personnel and 1 Technician

Major Products Tested / Test Equipment Facilities:

Electrical Section: Cables, Conductors, Switches, Sockets and Wiring Accessories, Domestic Electrical Appliances, Electrical Toys.

Mechanical Section: Utensils, Building Materials, LPG Stoves, LPG Cylinders, Seamless Cylinders, Agricultural Products, Pressure Cookers, CPVC and Plastic Pipes, Toys.

Chemical Section: Packaged Drinking Water, Packaged Natural Mineral Water, Cement, Steel and Steel Products, PVC Pipes, Skimmed Milk Powder, Baby Food.

Microbiology Section: Packaged Drinking Water, Packaged Natural Mineral Water, Skimmed Milk Powder, Baby Food.

Test Facilities Available:

• Number of Indian Standards (ISs): 281
• Mandatory Certification: 150 ISs
• Voluntary Certification: 131 ISs

New Initiatives:

• New test facilities created for 20 products/Indian Standards, including Electric Kettles, Electrical Toasters, Hair Dryers, Door Bells, Tube Light Starters, Electrical and Mechanical Toys, Soldering Irons, Bed Mattresses, Steel Furniture, Metal Chairs & Paper Bins, Thermosetting Sheets, Potassium Iodate (Food Grade), and Cashew Kernels. Expansion and renovation of the Microbiology Lab were also undertaken.
• Upgradation of testing facilities for Packaged Drinking Water and Packaged Natural Mineral Water.
• Creation of Referral Assay Lab for gold testing.
• Testing capacity enhanced from 250 samples per month to over 800 samples per month.
• Overall renovation of laboratory infrastructure.

Major Events:

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards, inaugurated the renovated Western Block of the laboratory on 25 January 2023.

One-day conclave “TranscendX – A Leapfrogging” on testing equipment for UPVC Pipes & Fittings, HDPE Pipes, and related plastic products was held on 17 March 2023.

One-day conclave “AuRAL” on the latest gold testing equipment was organized on 03 May 2023.
