Referral Assay Lab (RAL) for gold testing has also been established in March 2022.

WROL has total five testing sections comprising of Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Microbiological and Referral Assay Lab with a Scientific Cadre officer as Officer In-charge of respective testing sections

Technical manpower available section wise:

• Electrical lab has 7 Testing persons and 6 Technicians
• Chemical lab has 12 Testing persons
• Mechanical lab has 11 Testing persons and 9 Technicians
• Microbiology lab has 5 Testing persons
• RAL has 4 Testing persons

Major product tested at Electrical section are Cables, Conductors, Switch, Sockets and wiring accessories, Domestic Electric appliances, Electrical Toys

Major product tested at Mechanical section are Utensils, Building Material, LPG stoves, LPG cylinders, Seamless cylinders, Agriculture product, Pressure cooker, CPVC and Plastic pipes, Toys.

Major product tested at Chemical section are Packaged Drinking Water and Packaged Natural Mineral Water, Cement, Steel and steel products, PVC Pipes, Skimmed milk powder, Baby food.

Major product tested at Microbiology section are Packaged Drinking Water and Packaged Natural Mineral Water, Skimmed milk powder, Baby food.

IS/ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Details:

WROL is NABL accredited as per IS/ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for the testing fields of Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical, validity: 15.12.2022 (TC-6868).

New Initiatives:

• New Test facility has recently been created for 20 Products/Indian standards. Major products for which testing facility created are Electric Kettles, Electrical Toaster, Hair Dryer, Door Bell, Tube Light Starter, Electrical Toys, Mechanical Toys, Soldering Iron, Bed Mattress, Steel Furniture, Metal Chairs & Paper Bins, Thermosetting Sheets, Potassium Iodate – food grade and Cashew Kernels Expansion and renovation of Microbiology lab.
• Creation of complete testing of Packaged Drinking Water is currently under progress.
• Creation of Referral Assay lab for gold testing.
• Testing capacity has been enhanced from 250 samples per month to more than 650 samples per month.

Major Events:
New Facility/activity Inaugurated

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards has inaugurated Referral Assay Laboratory, Chemical Instrumentation Laboratory and renovation work of Western Regional Office Laboratory, Mumbai of Bureau of Indian Standards on 11 March 2022.

Study visit of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution visited Western Regional Laboratory of BIS on 28th April 2022. The Committee visited Electrical, Chemical, Microbiology, RAL and Mechanical sections of WROL.

Iconic Week Celebration

Department of Consumer Affairs, Govt of India has celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav-celebration of iconic week from 14th to 20th March 2022. In the series of events, Western Regional Office Laboratory (WROL), Mumbai organized.

(a) Exposure visit on the quality testing for Science stream students of 11th Standard class on 14 March 2022

Total 42 Students and faculty from two Junior Colleges viz. Anudatt Vidyalaya & Junior College, Kandivali (E), Mumbai and Global International Junior College, Bhiwandi, Thane visited WROL. The objective of the programme was to promote scientific aptitude and quality consciousness in school students. The students were familiarized with the work profile of the lab personnel and visited the testing section like electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Microbiology lab. Students were also apprised about the testing procedure of Gold Jewellery.

(b) Exposure visit on the quality testing for Industries on 15 March 2022

Total 42 industry personnel from different toys manufacturers visited WROL. The objective of the programme was to create awareness among industry on the testing infrastructure required for assessing quality of the products manufactured. The programme included interactive session with the participants on importance of quality and testing, familiarization of testing equipment’s and practical demonstration of testing of critical parameters.
