Who we are
During 1981-82, EROL was setup as a full-fledged Regional laboratory. With major expansion plans, it was decided to relocate the Centre to the spacious present day campus
The Eastern Regional Laboratory (EROL) is a premier laboratory of BIS, setup to support the Conformity Assessment scheme. It has been a forerunner in the frontier areas of Conformity Assessment for Steel, Cement and Jute products.
The objectives of the Lab is to conduct high quality testing, training and promote centralized facilities for new and modern techniques in the inter-disciplinary areas of modern day science.
The lab is having NABL Accreditation, which is valid upto Sep 2023.

Major Timelines
- 1968: EROL started functioning at Chowringhee approach
- 1981: EROL and ERO started functioning in Kankurgachi building & Electrical Lab started functioning at Chowringhee approach
- 2018: PDW testing started by EROL, 4th Lab in BIS
- 2019: Referral Assay Lab became functional, 3rd lab in BIS. MICRBIOLOGICAL lab became functional.
- 2021: Instrumentation Lab with state of the art equipment (ICP-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, AAS, Ion-Chromatograph) becomes functional
- 2021: Toy testing & Footwear testing to start
